The Gourds

The official story sounds a little like pennies from heaven. Kevin “Shinyribs” Russell was messing around with a ukulele chord book when he stumbled upon a magical - no, heavenly - few chords. Those chords became a melody that led Russell, one of two primary songwriters and a vocalist for the Austin, Texas-based alt-country rockers The Gourds (Friday, Melting Point), to write the ballad “Promenade.” Russell loved the song. But it didn’t exactly fit in with the smart, raucous roots music - dubbed “hillbilly literati” by The Gourds’ PR people - the band normally plays.
