R.E.M. on ‘Austin City Limits’ tonight

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

R.E.M. will appear on “Austin City Limits” to open the show’s 34th season tonight. The episode airs at 9 p.m. on GPB.

It’s the band’s first appearance on the show, and their performance was recorded in front of a small studio audience - about 350 people - during the band’s stint in March at Austin’s South By Southwest. Released in April, “Accelerate” was No. 1 in seven countries in its first week and debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Charts.

“ACL” will feature some new songs from “Accelerate,” including “Hollow Man,” along with classics like “Losing My Religion.” Encore airings of the show will be at midnight May 31, 11 p.m. June 1 and 1 a.m. June 2.

Video: Dark Meat, Quiet Hooves

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I got the following e-mail from Jill Sorrells of Switchburn, a pretty cool music video site:

“Hey I thought I would pass along some great Dark Meat live videos shot in Austin. Complete with body paint, clouds of glitter, inflatable dolphins, and naked hippies, the volume of props and distractions didn’t overshadow the musical talents of this large ensemble. They are shown here closing the night with their self proclaimed anthem “Three Eyes Open”, it made for one of the most unforgettable shows so far this year.”

I would embed the videos here, but they use a widescreen player with three cameras for a really nice effect. Besides “Three Eyes Open,” they have Dark Meat doing “No One Was There” and “Last of the Frontiersmen,” along with Quiet Hooves doing “Your Mother” and “Your Troubles.” You should be able to get to them all at this link.
