Widespread Panic will extend its record this weekend with its 32nd consecutive sellout at Red Rocks ampitheatre in Denver. As this story mentions, at 9,250 tickets per show, that’s 296,000 tickets sold. Not bad for the house band from the Uptown Lounge, eh?

Return to the land of Milk and Harvey

Harvey Milk

It’s merely happenstance, but there should be an aroma of irony (that probably recalls stale Coors Light) present when celebrated Athens band Harvey Milk takes the 40 Watt stage on Friday. “We broke up on June 27 in 1998,” says Stephen Tanner, noting that Harvey Milk’s latest local performance falls on the 10th anniversary of the band’s original disintegration. “It might be something that we mention, but it wasn’t planned - it’s definitely not an angle. It’s just a very bizarre coincidence.” The correlation of years does, however, play into the collective persona of Harvey Milk, whose throbbing attack is rivaled only by its shared sense of humor, as evidenced by Tanner’s hilarious liner notes in the band’s latest album, “Life … The Best Game in Town.” Read the full story…

DeMent enjoys ‘Prine’ time backup band

Jason Wilber

Jason Wilber (above) doesn’t have a problem playing second fiddle. In fact, he rather digs it. Wilber has released five solo CDs, but he’s probably best known as the longtime guitarist for distinguished singer/songwriter John Prine. Wilber will join David Jacques, Prine’s bass player, when folk singer Iris DeMent plays The Melting Point tonight. “You get to enjoy music in a totally different way,” he said of playing with other artists. “I find it a lot of fun.” Read the full story…

R.E.M. tears up the ATL

R.E.M. at Lakewood Ampitheatre

R.E.M. was in top form as the band ended its North American tour Saturday at Lakewood Ampitheatre, ripping through 28 songs that spanned the band’s 26-year career. Here’s a photo gallery from the show.

And as I figured, there are already several videos on YouTube from their performance. This one isn’t necessarily the best video out there, but it has good sound. It’s from the start of the show with “These Days” (probably my favorite R.E.M. song of all time) and “Living Well Is the Best Revenge” from “Accelerate.”
