Even outside the band name, there’s something that appeals as pretty much invincible about We Versus the Shark (playing a CD release show Friday at Caledonia). Named for the characters battling the animatronic Great White in the 1975 movie “Jaws,” the band maintains a sense of humor amid its aggressively agile music. At this year’s South By Southwest in March, that certain quality clearly caught the ear of Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein. Reporting on a roundup of bands at SXSW for NPR’s “All Songs Considered,” Brownstein gave WVTS a shout-out of huge proportions, noting the band’s live show was excellent and defining their sound as “if Primus and Fugazi had a baby.” Read the full story…

The American-and-Kenyan band Extra Golden (playing next Wednesday at Caledonia) recently kicked off its second tour of the United States with a concert in New Jersey where it was expected the group would play for at least six hours. “The show is for a Kenyan civic association, and that’s the way they do things,” says guitarist-vocalist Alex Minoff during an interview a few days before Extra Golden’s sojourn began. “The last time we played in America, we had several dates with audiences that were all from Kenya. When that’s the case, we play an entirely different show - along with our songs we play a lot of covers of well-known Kenyan pop hits and gear everything toward our audience.” Read the full story…
Subrig Destroyer, Sea Witch, Music Hates You

Subrig Destroyer is a local metal band with fuzzed-out bass and ear-drum crushing drums. Nashville, Tenn.-based metal band SeaWitch describes its sound as “Earth crushing doom.” They’re influenced by Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and The Melvins.
