Check out the Kenosha Kid

Local jazz-improv guru Dan Nettles recently returned from the Banff International Jazz Workshop in the Canadian Rockies where he studied with THE greats of the jazz world. Since then, he’s been collaborating with some of this town’s best musicians and injecting Athenian ears with his unique compositions. From Ornette Coleman to Bill Frisell to high-impact Klezmer, this new project is still growing and is a delight to watch unfold. Kenosha Kid occupies a much needed place in the Athens scene: energetic, sophisticated, improvised music that would be at home in New York City’s Tonic or Knitting Factory.

This evening (at 9 p.m. at the Flicker Theatre and Bar; $5) will feature primarily Dan Nettles’ new compositions -- including a four-part suite smartly titled “Rock and Roll” (inspired by the Glands, B-52's, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead) -- and perhaps a few danceworthy surprises from Kenosha Kid’s debut performances this summer at 283 Bar. Tonight’s ensemble features Athens’ finest on guitar, percussion, mandolin, and trombone.
