An instrumental evening

Kenosha KidKenosha Kid is one of the only true jazz ensembles in Athens today. The Kid has been picking up a loyal following after a series of successful shows at Flicker and the 40 Watt, and they'll be playing tonight at Nuçi's Space. The group is rooted in both cutting-edge modern jazz and classic sounds equally influenced by Bill Frisell as well as Duke Ellington. The ever-changing lineup is anchored by bandleader Dan Nettles on guitar. Sitting in will be Chris Enghauser on stand-up bass, Jeff Reilly on drums, Dave Nelson on trombone, Rick Ianucci on organ and John Neff on pedal steel. Kenosha Kid is featured on the 2004 AthFest Compilation CD. KK was featured last year in a blog post penned by Rob McMaken.

Shadow of a Great Name, also appearing on the bill tonight at Nuçi's, is an edgy rock trio from Raleigh, N.C., combining heavy riffs with synth loops and spacey keyboards. "[The music's] rhythmic foundation is complex and intricate, allowing dark surprises for the unsuspecting listener. Frazzled guitar riffs and samples intertwine in a muddy brew of repetitive hypnotic loops. ... Talents like this bring back memories of grade school music class when you were just beginning to learn how to listen intently to music." - Southeast Performer (Atlanta), April 2003. Check out another glowing review of their 2003 release "Lo-Fi Orchestra" on the Uzbekistan Progressive Rock Pages site. So get off the couch and into Nuçi's Space tonight for the low, low price of five bucks. Doors open early and the show is at 10 p.m.
