Local Music Television

Athens Film FoundationLast night I had the good fortune of attending the Sprockets Music + Video show at the 40 Watt, presented by the Athens Film Foundation. There were 18 music videos from local artists up for the coveted Audience Choice Award. As a member of said audience I was given a vote to cast. Here are some of the highlights:

"Never Believe" by Elf Power: A pretty fun pop song. As for the video, I'll have to go with what my partner in the front row, a little bohemian princess, said. "It's very Yellow Submarine meets high school audio-visual club, with a little Monty Python thrown in." If that doesn't paint a picture for you, I don't know what will.

"Jenna is a Rockstar" by Motorcade: This video was shot at Tasty World and features an actress that may have a future in low (or no) budget pornography. While even the B movies would take a pass, she did appear authentically pissed throughout what had to be one of the better (and funnier) videos of the evening. Oh yeah, when she vomits into the camera at the end of the song, that looks real too....

"La Vague (the wave)" by Kyle Dawkins: Arsty black and white video that captures what happens when you get a convertible and girls on diazepam to film themselves driving around slowly.

"Downhill Chong" by Empire State: Ambiant music that serves as a backdrop to footage of an Asian skateboarder tearing ass down a hill, around curves dodging cars, at breakneck speed. Well done (director) Jason Thrasher.

"Wires were Towers" by Maserati: A DIY punk show/house party captured brilliantly. It was so long, I felt as though I attended that party and got to know all the ruffians.

There were great entries by Flood City Shootout, Ordinary Germans Like Yourselves and Kiatu Verata Nikto, too, but this quasi-journalist's vote went to....

"Eddie Cane" by Lil Noc: The Athens rapper shows off the Classic City in style -- City Hall, Rocksprings Road, Bethel Homes, the downtown parking deck, Sanford Stadium. It was eye candy all the time, with all the bling-bling and booty shakin' the ATH has to offer. Spinning rims and UGA football jerseys -- it doesn't get any better than this.

The winner will be announced this evening at the Flagpole Magazine's Athens Music Awards at the Morton Theatre.
