Q&A with Bain Mattox

Bain MattoxBain Mattox, the reigning 2004 Flagpole Music Award winner for Best Singer/Songwriter and Best Rock Band, will be performing at The Fabulous Fox Theatre on March 3 as part of Delta Airlines Campus MovieFest, an independent film festival for college students. The band's music was featured in a few of the flicks. For ticket info hit up the Fox box office or Ticketmaster.

athensmusic.com recently caught up with the band's namesake and fired off a few questions:

Will this be your first opportunity to catch these films, and which feature your songs ... which songs?

This will be the first time for the band to catch the films. We have been out on the road so we missed a good part of the events leading up to the main event at The Fox. I'm very excited to see where our songs might fit into the puzzle of independent film. Which songs? All stuff off of our self-titled release: Slumber Plane, Thorn, Jet Black Ash, Sixes and Fives, Shotgun Pageant. ...

How did the filmmakers get their hands on your tunes?

Well, the way things go down, students at all of the college campuses in Atlanta get the opportunity to make independent films. They can check out a digital video camera and Apple laptop for one week to create. Because of all of the strict rules with music licensing these days (people getting sued and stuff over using music w/out permission), Campus MovieFest offers a pretty extensive song bank that the students can use for music in their films - music, from a lot of independent artists who have given their permission in order to support these students. We're a part of that song bank, have some material in these films, and are excited to be a part of it all.

Name one song up for an Oscar this year ... mmmmm, neither can I. Since we're on the subject of movies -- have you seen any good ones lately?

You know, I am way behind on watching movies. The last movie I saw in the theatre was "Life Aquatic," over Christmas. I thought that was marvelous. As for the Oscars, I really don't follow it, but I have a big crush on Winona Ryder, so if she is up for anything, I hope she wins.

You've kept us up-to-date with regard to touring life with your postcards (thank you), tell me what is the single amenity or convenience at home you miss the most?

I would probably say my shower ... not that I didn't shower on tour, but every single one is different. Is there going to be shampoo, conditioner, soap? Are you going to have one of those cooshy sponge things? At home, I know what to expect and I can get the job done just right.

What about life on the road is superior to the grounded home life?

Everyday there's something new, and usually interesting on the road. Home is great, but I like to be on the move.

When can we see you in Athens next?

If all goes according to plan, the next time you see us we will be releasing our new album. Nothing's on the books yet, because we're still recording it.
