Trey Boyer aids the Kings

Trey BoyerSo, like everybody else in town that recently took a few minutes to scribble our names and addresses on a postcard at the 40 Watt I'm getting my free subscription to Rolling Stone. A nice Hunter S. Thompson tribute issue arrived late last week, and a couple days ago I got one with Bob Marley on the cover. The first 33 pages are full-page advertisements. I was flipping to the story about Kings of Leon, a band from Tennessee that's been described as Lynyrd Strokes by some -- and without going into too much detail about the band, I can say it's a pretty good two-word summary. On page 97 (in the middle of a 15-page spread on the whippersnappers in Kings of Leon) the band references Trey Boyer (pictured), and his hand in the band's success (they're opening for U2 and sold 750,000 copies of their debut overseas -- only 100,000 domestically). Trey is a former Athenian and Georgia Bulldog who used to front a country act called Dimestore (highly recommended). He's relocated to Nashville and strikes out around town in a band that bears his name. When you get a chance to catch him locally, don't pass, and if you're in the mood to travel he's playing in Nashville this Saturday at The 5 Spot with our own Dodd Ferrelle.

For more on Kings of Leon, here's a review from Glide Magazine. While you're visiting Glide, check out the review of "Ghetto Bells," the latest from Vic Chesnutt.
