Helpert on the West Coast
2005 Flagpole Music Award nominee (in the singer/songwriter category) Leslie Helpert is enjoying a West Coast run in the sun this month which includes a stop at the Whole Earth Festival this weekend in Davis, CA, an interesting event that features exotic musicians, performance artists, movie screenings, yoga sessions, and instructional demos and seminars -- including an afternoon class where one can "learn the hows and whys of homemade reusable menstrual pads" and another that addresses "Gun violence as a public health problem" and (my favorite) the Stich'n'Bitch class that encourages patrons to "Bring your knitting/crochet/needlework project, or work up a square to send to the Nike Petition Blanket protesting unethical labor practices." In an era of Anheuser Busch sponsored diversions, this weekend in California promises to be quite enlightening.
Your next chance to catch Leslie locally will be at the Southworks Festival at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation in Watkinsville on Saturday May 28. A festival in Watkinsville? Well, OCAF boasts that the event, "attracts thousands of Northeast Georgia residents with its over 60 juried fine art and crafts vendors and outstanding regional performing artists." The festival is free.
