Bumping into town

This press release just in from the Bump camp:

Bump (tonight at Tasty World) is powerful postmodern American Rock & Roll. Endless energy, sturdy precision, an incessant work ethic and unconditional sincerity forge this Detroit based four-piece. Collectively Yorg, Eric Novak, Chris Sterr, and Clint Carpenter generate a dynamic neo-synth hook-driven brand of intelligent art rock. The equation is simple: over 400 shows, felonious theft, health problems and the steady rise up the club touring circuit; a special bond between these four high-school friends has generated what many would consider an "Incredible Consequence." ...

Bump's debut album, "Incredible Consequence," is a complete record of the band's past, present and future. Drawing from their collective roots, the album showcases the maturation process that every band with longevity experiences. For instance, "Last Chance"
illustrates the band's soulful rearing, while "Don't Be The Sunrise" offers a glimpse into the driving electronic exploration of the band. With "Keep it Close," the band displays the exhilarating future, as they dive deeper into a much more profound and dark sound.

Following five major festival performances in 2005, consecutive Detroit Music Award Nominations, a hefty and relentless touring schedule, and becoming one of Detroit's largest underground acts, Bump continues to turn heads through the country. Thus in 2005 the fuse was lit, Incredible consequence is the explosion that catapulted Bump onto the national scene.

Tishamingo, M Coast, Summer Hymns

Despite being misidentified as a Tallahassee-based band, Tishamingo gets some love here. The band was recently added to the 2006 Bonnaroo line-up, too.

Suicide Girls discuss Michael Stipe (via Large Hearted Boy).

Marshmallow Coast is now M Coast. Cable & Tweed has a fearless prediction and new songs for your listening pleasure here. C&T also has a few words re: Modern Skirts. The blog also reports a 7-6-06 Mendoza Line gig at The EARL in Atlanta. No word on a local date, yet.

The AthFest Web site does not confirm this, but Summer Hymns' MySpace site suggests it: Expect the band to perform Saturday at 8 p.m. on the main stage.

I've refrained from posting info related to Danger Mouse because he's no longer local, but since I mentioned Mendoza Line a breath ago - and they haven't been local for years - here's a Gnarls Barkley piece from USA Today.

Rowan and Rice shine at Melting Point

Rowan and RicePeter Rowan and Tony Rice put on a great performance at Melting Point last Thursday. Rowan is probably best know for his role in the "supergroup" Old and in the Way alongside Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and Vassar Clements.

On this evening Rowan and Rice were joined by the talented (and gorgeous) Bryn Bright on acoustic bass and an unknown beauty (at least to this blogger) on mandolin. I wasn't the only one to think that this mystery woman on mandolin wasn't plugged-in (or at least turned-up) on a few occasions. Nonetheless a wonderful set in great room. Attention smokers: the venue retains its intimacy and great sight lines even when you light up on the patio.

An interview with Caroline Monroe

Caroline Monroe

There is no alt or pop preceding the country music Caroline Monroe performs. Her jukebox-suited, prefix-free songs like "See Rock City" and "She Regrets Her Tattoos" are folksy narratives with a touch of Southern sass and twang. Monroe has been at Full Moon Studios in Watkinsville working on her debut with the help of local longhaired country outlaw Fester Hagood. Be on the lookout for "Ghost Town" soon and catch Caroline and Fester tonight at Wild Wing - it's a FREE SHOW!

Athensmusic.com recently caught up with the lovely Ms. Monroe:

Take us through the Caroline Monroe musical timeline.

Well, when I was a kid, piano lessons lasted about six months - with a woman that must have been a hundred years old. I remember she had long skeleton fingers.

Fast forward ...

Throughout college I played guitar, just for my friends mainly. During my senior year I played in a rock band called Umpteen. It was fun, but not really my vocal style - so I picked up my guitar and started playing country. I had my first solo gig at DT's [recently], and it was the first time I can remember playing in a bar where people were actually listening ... whispering.

You know, like a million people will read this interview and they'll see these hyperlinks to your MySpace page and the Web site and they won't be able to hear your music. What happened to the songs?

(With a grin) Well, um ... pretty much nothing is mixed yet, so it's bad advertisement for myself (laughing), and the studio I'm at! I'm probably gonna put one of those songs back up though.

We hear that the new album is coming along nicely. So many notable locals sitting in-lets name-drop.

Oh yeah, we got Randall Bramblett on organ, piano and sax; William Tonks on dobro; Rick Fowler playing guitar; Greg Veal and Mike Steel on bass; Don Spurlin on guitar; and Fester Hagood plays harmonica and guitar. The pedal steel parts are still up in the air. We have a few more instruments to record, a few vocal harmonies - mixing, mastering. Hopefully in a month or two you can get a copy of "Ghost Town" around town.

Share with our athensmusic.com readers something they won't learn anywhere but here.

I love a glass of Riesling, and I can light matches with my toes.

Betsy Franck

Betsy FranckBetsy Franck and the Bare Knuckle Band are ready to take off: In the five years that Betsy Franck has lived in Athens, she's recruited a variety of local musicians to back her in the Bare Knuckle Band (playing tonight at No Where Bar), and she thinks she's now found the right combination of players to complement her bold, bluesy vocal style. "There have been four different incarnations of the Bare Knuckle Band," quips Franck, a Virginia native whose former colleagues include members of the Southern rock band Grand Fury. "But the guys with me now are solely committed to this band." Full story.

Mogwai, Funkle Ester, Cripple Lilies

MogwaiScotland's Mogwai returns to Athens: Mogwai (playing at the 40 Watt on Monday) has a way of tearing up music around the world. Their mix of lo-fi sounding electronic feedback metal - otherwise known as "post-rock" - has been making waves since the band's music started escaping from Scotland in the mid to late 1990s. Mogwai's latest album, "Mr Beast," released March 6, is the band's fifth full-length studio album and returns somewhat to the straight-ahead rock style of the band's earlier work. Full story.

Funkle EsterFunkle Ester brings the ¹70s back to Athens: It may be difficult to tell through the band members' vintage clothes and the danceable covers of disco classics they play, but Funkle Ester (playing at the Georgia Theatre Friday) is a band born out of frustration. In 2000 and 2001, Bryan McLucas, bassist and vocalist, and drummer Andrew Liles gigged around Athens in a band that played original songs, but the shows weren't populated enough and the two wanted something different. Full story.

Cripple LiliesThe Cripple Lilies visit Athens: Despite a name that evokes images of flowers on crutches, not as vigorous as those in full bloom bolting towards the sun, The Cripple Lilies (Friday at Flicker) play hopeful and pretty songs. When Chad Bishop (guitar and vocals) first met Elizabeth Lopiccolo (flute and vocals), he was playing an open mic at a coffee shop with a friend, and as he recalls, "At some point Kent dropped his guitar and fell down somehow - and from the back of the room, Liz screamed, 'You dumbass!' and we both really appreciated that at the moment ..." he says, in that it brought humor to an awkward moment. Full story.

Time to vote for Flagpole Awards

Flagpole Music Awards

It's that time of year again. You can now vote online for your favorite local artists in the 2006 Flagpole Music Awards. The Annual Flagpole Athens Music Awards Show kicks off AthFest on June 22 at the Morton Theatre. The awards are "designed to honor and celebrate those who make Athens, GA a center of musical creativity, enjoyment and accomplishment."

From the list of nominees, it looks like the Drive-By Truckers have joined the ranks of Widespread Panic and R.E.M. as bands too big to consider. I suppose you can write them in.

And album of the year is a tough one. I might have to go with Modern Skirts' "Catalogue of Generous Men."

Benefit show for Oconee teacher

A benefit show for curiously dismissed Oconee teacher. Here’s the Line-up and the scoop from organizer Jared Smith:

Nuci’s Space, Saturday May 13, 2006, $5, with Pilot Coat, Earational, Crush, Nick Light and hey, revolution!

The story goes like this: Originally Mr. Hwang, a graduate of Georgia Tech, worked as a civil engineer and tutored physics and calculus on the side. Soon he grew tired of engineering and decided to pursue teaching. He earned a master's in mathematics education from the University of Georgia and began student-teaching at Oconee County High School. ...

A few weeks ago, two years after he began teaching full time at Oconee, Mr. Hwang confirmed rumors that he was being let go. Apparently, the administration considers Mr. Hwang to "not be what [we were] expecting, professionally." Coincidentally, Oconee County High School is hiring a new football coach and they need spaces for his assistants. Also Mr. Hwang is the only Asian-American teacher employed by Oconee County High School.

A day or so after the protests began, two administrators threatened Mr. Hwang with termination if the protests did not stop. They claimed that he started the protests and that he wanted the uproar. Even though the principal denied having talked to Mr. Hwang, several teachers confirmed that the confrontation took place.

The concert is to raise money for a scholarship that is in Mr. Hwang's name. The criteria are as follows.

- The student must exhibit honor and integrity (two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or previous employers must be submitted).
- The student must be accepted into either a technical college or a four-year university.
- The student's intended college major must be something to benefit the community (education, law, social work, fine arts, music, etc.).
- The Student must contribute a brief account of his/her toughest challenge and how they overcame it.

Mr. Hwang will pick the student before the end of the year and will award the money then.
