Cosmic Charlie keeps truckin¹ with the Grateful Dead: Athens guitarist Michael Wegner assents that when he was a teenager in Rhode Island, he legitimately could be described as a Deadhead, a part of the cultural phenomenon that placed the Grateful Dead at the center of the universe. While Wegner isn't as fervent about the Dead these days as he was growing up, the seminal San Francisco-based band still occupies a solid spot in his world. Wegner plays in the Grateful Dead tribute group Cosmic Charlie, which will celebrate its seventh year together and the 64th birthday of the late Jerry Garcia Monday at the Georgia Theatre. Classic City Hip Hop reboots for summer: Like thousands of University of Georgia students this summer, members of the hip-hop scene in Athens are taking some time to regroup. Tommy Valentine, one of Athens' hip hop's most vocal proponents, wants to solidify a community that, thus far, has been fractured. It's been a couple of months since an article offering a comprehensive survey of Athens hip hop was published in Flagpole magazine, bringing to light that lack of unity. Valentine says the article was an "eye opener" that cued him in to the big picture of a scene he's been on the inside of for several years. Full story.

From REMHQ:
On September 12th, EMI will release the first comprehensive CD and DVD anthologies of R.E.M.'s 1980s I.R.S. Records catalog. The CD will be called "And I Feel Fine ... The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987" and will be available in 2 formats: a 21-track single-disc collection of hits and band/fan favorites and a 2-CD Collector's Edition with a second 21-track disc of rarities including alternate takes, demos, previously unreleased songs, mixes, and live recordings of classic R.E.M. The DVD, "When the Light Is Mine The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 Video Collection," includes the music videos from Chronic Town through Document, as well as live television performances and James Herbert’s short film, Left of Reckoning. DVD extras feature early interviews and rare acoustic performances.
Bertis Downs had the following to say about the upcoming release: "This will be a noteworthy package of R.E.M.’s early years, which a lot of people don’t know very well. The guys themselves picked the songs to be included and sequenced the records, had some fun with the liner notes, and Michael and Chris coordinated on a lot of key aspects of the package (actually all key aspects of the package). As for “Why Now?” Well, for one thing, there has never been a real great retrospective of the 5 year/5 album period of R.E.M.’s history known as the I.R.S. years. For another, after 25 years (or 26 but who’s counting?), a recognition of the specialness of these recordings seemed a fine and appropriate thing, and we figured if the band and HQ staff here in Athens had some input, the world would end up with a package that truly has “something for everybody.” ...
For the R.E.M. aficionado, there are some surprises and true rarities here that are sure to delight and amuse; for the uninitiated, or those who first came into the R.E.M. world during Stand or Losing My Religion or Daysleeper or Imitation of Life or Bad Day or Leaving New York, whether by factors of geography, or age, or siblings, or whatever reason, this is a good history lesson on the days of yore when the band first started out and were writing sometimes 2-3 songs a day, many of which became classics, and some of which were lost in the mists of tape and time and vault. So…with those sorts of considerations as the guiding lights and impetus, Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe and the rest of us are pleased to participate in this exercise of re-releasing the “hits” of their early years, accompanied by some great things that we had forgotten about, if we ever remembered them in the first place: And I Feel Fine… the Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982- 1987. The bonus disc is especially chock full of material for the experienced, discerning fan and the newcomer alike."

From Jenn in the DBT camp:
What's up DBT friends? I know, it's only been a couple of weeks and here I am with more news! It's a good month.
Good News - The DBT Fall Tour will be announced on Aug. 1. Look out for it. I know the DBT's been having fun with The Black Crowes but it'll be good for them to get back to their own shows and rock it out. Watch for tour dates in your town!
Our friends The Drams are releasing their first CD today. Go buy it, because it's frickin' great, and we should all support good music. Speaking of, Patterson mentions this in the Dispatch from the Road he's just sent us, along with a lot of other things that have been on his mind lately. I've added it below. Take care now. -j
DISPATCH FROM THE ROAD: July 23 2006 - Boston
Y'ALL:
Greetings from Boston (or actually the back parking lot of some amphitheater somewhere outside of Boston). Tour is going fine and dandy. Homesick for my family (we all are) as we're weeks past our 3 week law with a few more left to go. ...
The tour is going well for us, in that we've covered a lot of ground, some familiar and some new, everyone has been super nice to us.
The Black Crowes band and crew couldn't be a more swell bunch of folks and we've been shown hospitality at every turn. We play 40 minute (rigidly timed) set, early as hell as a very sober audience walks into the arena. Not exactly rockstarshit, but it beats sacking groceries and waiting tables (two jobs I'm only barely qualified to do, but have done for years at times). It's made us a tighter band than ever and our upcoming fall tour will be the payoff for all this pent up ROCK. (Richmond and DC last weekend gave us a glimpse of what lie ahead).
FALL TOUR is about to be announced (if it hasn't already). I know it will involve shows (a long time in coming) with our good friend BOBBY BARE JR. We've played together occasionally in the past and I've long been a big fan and look forward to some hang time. (Congratulations on the beautiful new addition to your family Bobby).
I also hear it will involve some long awaited dates with our very close friends THE DRAMS. Three of those guys were in Slobberbone, whose history has been so tangled with ours since our beginnings. The new band is even better and their new album is out any day now. A fine fucking album and a must have for discerning fans of well written well played Rock and Roll.
Otherwise I've been keeping myself busy writing for several different projects.
Wading through the Rockin' Bones Box Set of 50's punk which is already my favorite new box set since the fabulous Faces set 2 years ago. Watching the Dylan No Direction Home documentary, reading the Conversations With Tom Petty book (looking forward to his new album tuesday), watching the news and frothing at the mouth at the tragic absurdity that passes for world policy, Watching PJ Harvey DVD, Network, We Jam Econo (Minutemen Doc. DVD), and Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol 2. Also read Phillip Roth's Everyman, which is the finest fiction I've read this year. A beautiful and haunting book.
Still digging The Gnarles Barkley, on a big Bowie Alladin Sane kick, Neko Case's new album (my favorite so far this year along with Centro-Matic's latest). and loving the new album by a Nashville band called Glossary. Watch out for them.
Neil Young selected Jason's song Dress Blues to be placed on his website. I think its the finest song Jason has written yet and probably my favorite song this year.
World of Hurt is #1 on RollingStone.com. I'm not quite sure what that means, but I'm happy for that song to get noticed, as I probably feel stronger about that one than anything I've written since The Living Bubba. I think it's a hit whether it sells or not, but what do I know?
We're close to announcing a massive Nuci's Space Benefit for late in the year. They are our #1 cause and pet local charity. If you're not familiar with them or what they do check out http://www.nuci.org/ and see for yourself. What they are trying to do in Athens GA should serve as a prototype for something that should spring up in every town with a music or arts scene.
THANKS again to everyone out there who has come early to catch our sets. Thanks to our friends back home for providing so much moral support and help for our families.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
BEST ALWAYS,
Patterson Hood

The Deacon Brandon Reeves finds a higher place in his music: While his folksy Delta-blues certainly elicits a spiritual response, Gainesville's The Deacon Brandon Reeves (playing Friday at Flicker) is an accidental Deacon. "I played with a friend named Doo, and he went by The Reverend Dr. Doo, because he's got three Ph.D.'s in theology; he's actually a doctor and a Reverend - and he plays an amazing blues harmonica. He just kinda called me 'The Deacon' at a gig, and it floated around, then stuck." Full story.
For Atlanta's Angie Aparo, performance is key: In recent years, Atlanta music veteran Angie Aparo has embraced the Internet in a big way, but when it's all said and done, every new medium he tackles returns him to the essence of his original love, performing before an audience. "We'd been using the Internet for promotion for a long time, and I didn't really care about it," says Aparo, who will appear with his band the Infidels at Tasty World tonight. "But once I realized how monumental the Internet was and how it changed our ability to access information, I thought of it as a canvas and an art form, as opposed to just a promotional tool." Full story.
Ensemble goes back in time in tribute to The Band: This year marks the 30th anniversary of "The Last Waltz." On Thanksgiving Day in 1976, 5,000 fans got to witness one of the greatest farewell concerts of all time. The Band, which initially began as Bob Dylan's backing band during his "electric" period, bid farewell with the help of an amazing list of guest musicians. The concert was filmed and released in 1978 by famed director Martin Scorsese and to this day is still regarded as one of the finest concert films - rockumentaries - ever. And now, with the help of the Atlanta-based The Last Waltz Ensemble, fans can experience "The Last Waltz" for themselves. They perform tonight at the Georgia Theatre. Full story.

Athens music man extraordinaire Randall Bramblett will see the release of his latest CD, "Rich Someday," on New West Records on Tuesday. The 13 tracks, produced by percussionist Gerry Hansen at Atlanta's Creekside Station (with a few tracks mixed by John Keane in Athens), offer another solid selection of Bramblett's beautifully crafted songwriting - from the slightly edgier title track to the quieter, sweetly reflective "Stupid Shoes" and "Concrete Mind." (Not that it wasn't pretty clear before, but it's now obvious Bramblett simply can't write a bad song.) He's joined by old friend and fellow Athens legend Davis Causey, with Mike Hines, Michael Steele and Hansen.
Before taking off on a tour of the Southeast for the remainder of the summer, Bramblett celebrates the release of the CD on Saturday at the 40 Watt Club. Doors open at 9 p.m. Advance tickets are $8 at SchoolKids Records. (From Marquee)

Athens' Ham1 (playing Saturday at the Caledonia) defies easy-to-market compartmentalization. The creative outlet for songwriter (and elementary school reading teacher) Jim Willingham resists simple description and being pigeon-holed by a specific style or genre. Last year's critically embraced self-titled debut is a folksy, quirky and often psychedelic album that explores the outer limits and inner workings of pop music in that the exotic instrumentation and unique approach are catchy without being spoon-fed. Full story.
Greg Rice thinks he's a rock star - or at least his band, the Cartridge Family, wants you to think all the members are rock stars. Or perhaps the band just thought "Here Come the Rock Stars" was a good name for its 2005 debut album. Whatever the reason, Athens music fans can decide for themselves what the rock star status is of the Raleigh, N.C. foursome (Rice on keys, Joe Rechel on guitar, Stephen Gardner on drums and C. J. Irwin on bass) when they play at Lunch Paper tonight. Full story.
