Taking their tunes up north

R.E.M. is blowing through Canada. Here are a couple of reviews/interviews with the Canadian press:

"Snoozing their religion" (review) from the Calgary Sun.

"Southern comfort zone" (interview) from the Calgary Sun.

"R.E.M. gets back to rockin'" from the Winnipeg Sun.

Also, here is the direct link to the very lengthy London Independent story mentioned below.

Too muted, what kind of description is that?! Iv'e been to many concerts including the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, and never have I heard such a clear in a stadium as I did at REM. Both Aerosmith and the Stones are considered rock and roll heroes and they would never be bashed for pulling the same stage antics over and over again. I mean are Mick Jagger's moves really that much better than Michael Stipes and does Mich even provide more variety?! The One I Love, Man on the Moon, Whats the Frequency Kenneth, and Losing My Religion are REM's most popular songs. A person could know absolutely nothing about REM and still know those songs. So is it any wonder why people got into those songs more so than others. REM has so much variety and the fans will no doubt vary on the songs they find preferrable. Other than Everybody Hurts and Nightswimming, was there anything else REM could have played to get the crowd more into it. Maybe they should have played It's the End of the World, a song that has turned into a cliche because it is regarded as their best song by half wits. People expect too much out of REM and they like to bring them down. Maybe it's because they really are the best band in the world. I don't think so, but press like this suggests just that.
